Hi,

I used to work in search marketing but am a newbie to affiliate marketing. I'm starting with two offers - 1) Teeth whitening and 2) Google start-up kit. The CPA payouts are $30-$40.

I picked MSN adcenter because I thought it might be a good place to start (lacks volume of Google, but probably not as competitive).

For both 1) and 2) I bought domains and wrote pre-sell pages essentially pitching those offers, modeled after what I've seen others doing.

My challenge is finding cheap traffic. Keywords on MSN like "make money online" go for several bucks a click. I obviously lose people on my pre-sell page, then some more people on the actual sell page, so even with a $40 CPA, the math doesn't work out at this level.

I realize a lot of this game is about testing, iterating, and testing ... but one needs a starting point, right? Can you guys give me some tips in terms of how to find cheap traffic and how to iterate early on? Moving a few pixels around here and there won't help if I am paying $2 a click on a search engine (and obviously FB won't allow either of these).

Thanks!
oo

Hrm,

I'm a a newbie too - haven't figured out very much yet. I think long-tail keywords might be able to help you with costs. Instead of "teeth whitening" which is probably a highly-competitive keyword, you would try "teeth whitening while sleeping" or other long searches. Those keywords are less competitive, and therefore less costly.

Instead of "white", think "white on rice in a glass of milk on a paper plate in a snowstorm".

But I'd imagine everyone knows about those too - right? I don't think I could invent better long tail keywords than the next guy.

How else do people get good traffic?

Have you had any luck with Facebook?

Luck with Facebook depends on what you are selling. There is a whole thread about Facebook by Nicky Cakes, just search it. QMcFarlan is right, long tails are your only hope. You should always pick out the highest payout. It is quiet possible to make more money with a lower payout and an advertiser's site that converts better than 1%.

That is awesome.

Look at media buys, someone did a good post on sponsoring relevant forums, do a search for that. If you can find a relevant forum (think mens health, beauty tips etc)
