Getting past email spam filters (legitimately)

Hi - I want to start a mailing list. But I want the messages that I send to my subscribers to land in their main inbox... is this possible to do these days? I know with hotmail it seems impossible. Do you do this? If so, how?

Test your messages against spam assassin filters. That would be a good start.
