Anyone know of any resources with tips on how not to get emails blocked by Outlook's built-in junk mail filtering? I'm trying to do something completely white-hat, basically one of my sites with protected content has an "invite a friend" type of feature, in which they can fill in some email addresses of their friends, and my site sends out emails with a pre-canned "You've been invited, click below to visit the site" kind of thing, with the originating user's email address as the sender. The problem is in testing it on myself, Outlook keeps putting the emails in the junk mail folder. I suspect it has to do with the wording or the amount of text vs link. Anyone got any tips (other than throw a bunch of garbage words at the end, I mean - I want to keep this clean)?

Thanks rosem, but I didn't see anything on there that would help my situation.

In a nutshell, Outlook has some secret way of determining if a message is junk or not. I'm sure plenty of spammers would love to get their hands on this info too, but I just want to make sure my legit "invite a friend" emails don't run afoul of Outlook's algorithm.

Outlook uses a text file that contains rules for matching junk mail. The file is called "FILTERS.TXT" and on my installation is located in:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033

They update this thing all the time and is one of the downloads you get from http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/downloads/default.aspx

Anyway all the rules are in there. Make sure your "legit" emails don't contain any of the phrases filters.txt lists.

Thanks Palmerville, although I don't seem to have that file on my system, probably because I don't have Office 2007, just 2003. In any case, I found this, which is exactly what I was looking for, except that my test message, which Outlook classified as junk, doesn't match any of this stuff anyway, so it's back to the drawing board...
