Yea, it's huge and runs on a heavily modded phpBB.

I wonder how much it makes aside from that venture capital.

Sick, in asia that cartoon style really is an everyday thing like we get to see comercials and things. Never thought forums could grow out to be like this. this is not a community it's more like a world

Thats actually rather brilliant - they managed to take advantage of the MMO boom in a completely different way. I wonder if well see a lot of copycats spring up (if there arent a lot already).

Yeah I read somewhere that at this point it is so far modded it isn't even PHPBB any more.

No doubt... the MMO boom is huge and these guys picked right up on it.

lol there lots of these things around. Think I've seen like 4 diff ones so far, this must be the most succesful tho

Yeah communties are a dime a dozen, its when you get those that really syand out and push ahead that make you take notice and look into "what are these guys doing that I can learn from and apply to MY site."

Those avatar style RPG's are insane. I remember demo'ing an adult oriented one back in 2001, and I just never understood how people were so addicted to it. Those sites make a killing.. Anyone hear a cash register?

Yep, Gaia is the largest forum on the net, the owner did a great job on the community. I've heard they have like an entire building stuffed with servers for themselves.

I was involved in building an avatar world back in late 2003, early 2004. The lead programmer had some personal problems that really killed it.

World of Warcraft brings in $900 million in revenue a year. These things are not going away.

Blizzard hasnt made out as well as you might think. Or at least blizzard as a whole. Vivendi has though. A buddy of mine who works as an artist and knows a few people from blizzard told me a lot of the senior WoW employees left because of dissatisfaction with how they were treated in terms of compensation because it did so well.

Long story short, you might know another game they put out, called guild wars :)

Oh yeah, I think the original guys at blizzard are all gone. They wanted to take WoW in a different direction, instead they ended up with an EQ in a Warcraft universe.

I don't know the whole story with Blizzard but a lot of their employees from Diablo/Diablo 2 left and made Guild Wars which is now fairly popular for a first release.

The costs for it had to be significant though, with the pixel artists for their "MMO." Definately some money to be made though with something similar, by taking advantage of the addictiveness of the whole MMO thing.
