Asia is nice, but its fucking far. I don't feel like dying from a stroke after a 15 hour plane ride.

Thinking about heading over to mexico for a bit. I'm wondering about things like internet access and monthly/yearly rent on a three bedroom apartment.

I just moved to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico - from Victoria, BC back in December. I moved here w/ my gf whos Canadian as well, but she's never lived outside of Canada. She loves it here, and so do I. I've also lived in Costa Rica, and Panama, so if you wanna chat privately hit me up on skype: kappa_83 and I can probably answer a lot of your questions.

The one thing I will say, is Costa Rica is expensive as shit if you dont want to live like a peasant, and if you're going to live in say, San Jose, you're about a 45 minute to 1 hour drive to the beach.. and not a nice beach. Rents are a lot more than what I pay here in Mexico, and we also have Costco, Walmart, Sams Club, all that shit.. and its all about a 2 minute drive from my house. And when I say 2 minutes, I dont mean 20.. I mean 2 minutes. There are tons of beautiful beaches only minutes away as well.. the closest is just down the road, about a 3 minute drive.

As far as Mexico goes -- I am very happy here. Cabo is a great place, not too big, and there a lot of foreigners here who all look out for each other. All the bullshit you hear about happening is in the border towns or some other spots in Mexico, but not here. It's very well protected and is basically the Mexican governments cash cow.

Groceries here in Cabo are about 30% the cost of prices back home. And you get the same shit. Same brand, everything. It's just cheaper. I'm really happy I came here, and do not plan on leaving for a while. The internet is great as well, and costs about $30 USD/month. I pay $800/month for my 2 bedroom, 2.5 bathroom fully furnished condo. It includes the HOA fees, and also has a shared pool, and a full time gardener, etc. And the community I live in is gated. Bills like internet, satellite and water/electricity are maybe $100/month at the most.

Thanks for the info. Will take you up on the additional questions. What are you getting about 10-12 hours of daylight every day there?

+Repped.

I'm in the same boat. I want to see the world/live abroad for awhile and would like to hear about some alternatives to SE Asia.

I just checked the local CL. 2BR fully furnished condo, 2 minutes from the beach, looks nice from pics - $525/month sound about right?

I'm guessing a lot of tourists are in the area?

How's diving/surfing/hiking, etc? Fun stuff to do outdoors?

How are the visas in Mexico, pretty easy to just hop down there for 6 months to a year with no headaches?

As far as weekend getaways, I know you're on the end of the peninsula, any cool islands/other stuff in the area?

Thanks!

I gotta be real. Though I feel a bit like a scared biatch, the cartels freak me out with regards to living anywhere in Mexico, even though it looks (otherwise) cheap and awesome.

Is it really that unlikely that the cartels decide to move in and kidnap some rich foreigners?

Mexico? You fucking kidding me? Don't you see what's happening with all the foreigners disappearing, getting raped and killed? Sure you'll be safe if you hang out in your little "gated communities", but fuck what kind of life is that? if I go spend a few years somewhere I'd rather be in a place where I can walk freely, anywhere and anytime of the day or night. ESPECIALLY if you're going with your wife and/or kids.

OP: Pop a Zopiclone pill and take the 15 hour plane ride to Asia son. You won't regret it. Plus women are hotter and cost of living is way cheaper. Asia kills South America in pretty much every department. :cool2:

I think every place/cartel is different, but I will tell you a story to offer some perspective on the cartel that controls the area where I live.

4 weeks ago the police caught some kidnappers, about 6 of them. 2 of them were women.

They were quickly hauled off to jail.

It took not longer a week before each and every kidnapper was murdered in jail.

So regarding kidnapping innocent folks, at least in the area where I live, it is not tolerated by the cartel here.

It is better to check out the places where cartels don't really exist or places that are historically considered neutral zones: Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Merida. Merida has the lowest crime rate in all of Mexico.

It's easy to get a media brainwash like avatar33, but remember Mexico is a gargantuan country and not all of it is just like the border.

I went to Vietnam last year, and 15 hour flights aren't fun, hours feel like days.

Cheap as hell though, you can easily find nice places to stay for $5 per night, when I say nice, I mean comfortable beds, hot shower, air con, no bugs and about a 5 min walk from the beach. Heavenly.

Places further down the peninsula are relatively safe. It's something to consider but I would definitely look at the murder maps and make an informed decision before letting the fear keep you from paradise.

In other words, COZUMEL BABY

if hes surrounded by other foreigners than its probably safe. mexico doesn't want anyone fucking with the people who pay 99% of their tax revenue! someone - besides drugs - has to fund those crooked cops in the border towns.

+1 Vietnam.

Puerto Vallarta, Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Cozumel are all very safe too. As many long time residents I know have pointed out "tourism pays the bills, so cartels stay away". Fully furnished, all utilities, 2 bed, 2 bath condo 10 minute walk to the beach in PV is about $600-700. Don't drive, that's the #1 thing cops extort expats for. Carry an extra 500 pesos and you can talk your way out of any other police encounters though. But like travelling to any city, just don't be stupid and you'll be fine.

First of all, 15 hours is just to Tokyo. I just came back on a 22 hour flight from Bangkok. I'd fucking pay Double to make it just 15 hours.

Secondly; Totally worth it.

The USA, where I was born and raised, is broken in so many ways that It's no longer a comfortable place to live. Just the food alone is a good enough reason to move to BKK permanently...

Seen a decent amount of the world that I wanted to see, except for South America. Still have to get down there. Been to Mexico several times, and the Carribean a bit, but wouldn't really recommend either.

If I was headed to South America, I'd probably go far south. Seems the further you get away from the US, the better it is. :) Just keep going south, past all the drug cartels problems in Mexico, past all the cocaine factories and rebel / liberation groups, until you hit say Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, etc. Seems like a very good, peaceful life down that way.

Plus it wouldn't be as touristy, which at least I think is a good thing. Never quite understood why people spend thousands to travel half way across the world, only to sit around with people from their home country and eat fish & chips together. But whatever, to each their own...

Downsides?

-People drive kinda crazy.
-Some taxis will try to rip you off if you don't know the prices
-Everyone still just thinks im a tourist and is constantly offering me tours.
-Buying a car is a bit of a bitch.
-You have to leave every 6 months for 72 hours to renew your tourist visa (if you're here on a tourist visa) - but its not really a downside, I'll check out belize for a few days.
-Booze is really, really, cheap. So you get more hangovers :zzwhip:
-In the summer, it gets fucking hot here. I'm talking 100+

Other than that.. I really cant think of much. Maybe Andrew can chime in on some other things.. but atleast here in Cabo that's about all I can think of. And remember to look both ways before you cross the street.
