I'm in the process of migrating all my stuff back to cPanel and of course, there's no converter from cPanel to DA and the DA backups process is such a ugly mess.

That's all. Avoid DA like the plague. Until subigo comes in this thread and talks about how awesome it is.

Was buying new hosting the other day... didn't even think about cpanel/da... first one was DA and I was like wtfffffffff. Canceled immediately. Can't stand it at all.

I feel your pain.

I don't see where your coming from at all. I like it way more than cpanel.

I hate them both. I started running Webmin/Virtualmin and haven't looked back. It takes a little while to get used to, but once you do you will quickly see how retarded CPanel and DirectAdmin really is.

DirectAdmin > cPanel any day of the year... if you're forced to use a control panel.

Coincidentally, I'm in the process of writing an article entitled "Ditch Your Control Panel - You're Wasting Resources" for zenssh.com right this second.

lol, yea I got on your case pretty quickly bout some of your proposed material didn't I. :P

I'm all for ditching the control panel too, been that way for the last year and a half. Course I don't run bind, email, etc on my VPS, I'm strictly running web, ssh and database, for DNS I usually use namecheap/godaddy's internal, or a 3rd party DNS server, and for emails I prefer google apps and I just update the MX records accordingly.

I just started using DA today and it was very confusing to start...well still is. However I think I pretty much got the hang of things, so no real complaints.

I do agree that it makes you do things in a real round about way in the default skin. IE: you have to change the user level to manage domains, etc. Why the hell not just have them on the same page lol.

lol... yeah yeah. Also, dream client. If everyone outsourced DNS and email the world would be a better place. I've got some clients running one site on a vps, with less than 2,000 visitors a day, and they can't live without at least 500MB of RAM.

I found vpsbible.com has very good tutorials on setting up an unmanaged vps.
Ubuntu, Nginx (faster that Apache), MySQL, PHP5, Xcache, special WordPress guide etccccc

i like directadmin a lot...but i'm too lazy to really work a server without a control panel right now...although i love being in ssh and commands...

I don't use DA on any high powered hosting, so it is hard to tell what the overhead savings are. CPanel may be a pig, but it is quite easy to use.
