My parents are travelling to India soon. They have to apply for and get a tourist VISA before they can go. They usually apply in-person at the VISA office and get it done. Somehow my mom ended up on a site that lets you apply online. The site is https://india-visa.co/index.php and she found it via Google Adwords.

They submitted all personal details, aswell as $90 credit card payment to submit the application. They go to the VISA office today to pick it up and the guy says they were scammed from this website, it isn't legit, and close to 10% of the people who come in were scammed by it.

My concern is, with all the information that they submitted about themselves, including a headshot (..fml), they would be prime targets for Identity Theft. Someone could easily create a passport with all the info they gathered, plus other scary chit I don't even know about.

I'm going to get my Dad's credit card cancelled, but is there anything I can do about the potential Identity Theft? Are any of those online monitoring services any good?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks bros.

PS: We are all based in Canada, and my parents have Canadian passports.

Want a free trial for a monitoring service? :pimp:

I have Experian Credit Monitoring courtesy of Adobe. Seems to work, it pinged me within a day or so of my having purchased a new car.

So this stuff alerts you, that's nice and all, what can you do to stop it? That sucks OP, GL

they need to put a credit hold with the 3 credit agencies. Experian, Transunion, and Equifax. Get this done now. It will prevent anyone from taking any new credit out.

I hope you were adopted, bro...

edit: j/k, bro- good luck with this, but really, time for a sit-down seminar on ITSec with momster.

Yea, cancelled the credit card, and phoning the credit reporting agencies now.

you might want to check what kind of additional security that can be put in place for their bank accounts.

BTW If they put in their personal info, they probably gave them their email. It might be likely they used the same password for the account registration as their email.

Change email passwords.
Change banking passwords.

Change any other password that matches the one they gave. Also make sure they have a backup email address on file , so they dont lose control of their email.

hey op, by this point in time there isnt much legft but to kill yourself #AND your parents.

you see, when you get fucked hard in the ass like so, really once your asshole is strectched past a certain point (ie such as yourself and your parents) there isn't ANY COMING BACK.

Without getting tcomplex and thus confusiong basically you played the game (#oflife) and lost.

its over.

ill let you decide the next best step forward (self immolation) .

Someone should make it a news that google adwords is supporting a massive phishing fraud (It's not a scam, fraud). It seems that site gets at least 100+ victims a day. #1 ranked ad for keywords like "India visa", "indian visa" ,etc

I think they're probably running visa sites for some other countries too, not only India.

It was reported on news channel some months back, really indian government is spending all the time on the upcoming election campaigning.

Let me know if you need any help.

So why can't some agency seize their domain or at least do something about it. Its funny that they spend so much effort on fighting piracy instead of going after phishing sites.

Yea, I did some more digging and it looks like they have a whole network of sites that rank for "country + visa" related terms.

I will also try to notify adwords about the site.

Thanks everyone for your help!

I did everything that was mentioned in the thread. I signed my parents up for Equifax and Transunion monitoring. I will keep an eye on it and hopefully nothing suspicious happens.

I also determined that the merchant account they are using is with this company, http://www.realexpayments.co.uk/. I will be contacting them on Monday to let them know what is going on, plus try to get more details about the company that the merchant account is under. Do you think they would give me any info about them? Or would I have to take legal action to get the merchant account owner's details?

Up to the company, but more than likely, they're not just going to hand over customer info because someone asked. You'll have to go the legal route.

Also, contact ICANN with a list of their domain(s). There's a chance ICANN will investigate and seize them.

If you really want to get nasty, contact the police, and press your local police to contact Interpol regarding the matter. I'm sure Interpol would be interested in an organization stealing passport information from citizens all over the world.
