NVU was discontinued years ago - the replacement/bug fix version is called Kompozer and has CSS support. Get from Kompozer.org or Mozilla.org.

For some reason, Kompozer (both on Mac and XP) immediately strips out any PHP code I have in my documents I open with it - Any clue on that?

TextWrangler is hands down the best free Mac editor. If you don't mind coughing up a little cash check out Coda Panic - Coda - One-Window Web Development for Mac OS X

I suggest Text Mate. Better than Text Wrangler.

@Johu As far as stripping out PHP or other code, there is a forum here devoted to Kompozer. Apparently you have to use some kind of plugin called handcoder or something for code. I have never used it (or any HTML editor) after discovering Wordpress.
