The catch is that the next year costs 35$ so you should move it to Godaddy etc. before the first year runs out.

Why GoDaddy? I think there are other better registrars. Does GoDaddy have any advantage I am not aware of?

I don't use GoDaddy, I use Moniker mostly, but Go Daddy do have emormous market share (into double digits). So they're obviously a popular choice.

you want a domain/hosting for free, go try Microsoft Office Live Small Business.

The only reason Register dotCom is still around is because most of their clients paid for 10 year renewals. Otherwise, they suck.

NameCheap, Moniker, GD are all ok (stay away from 1and1)
