Looking to start a new site. There are a couple forums in the niche, one that is fairly popular (3mil pages indexed, 300k links says seoquake plugin). It ranks for a few of the bigger keywords along with a whole ton of longtail.

My idea was to not do any link building. Just write posts on longtail keywords. I'd use the longtail keywords that forum is ranking for to find the post topics to write. I'd think generally blog posts outrank forum posts fairly easily but am I maybe oversimplifying things or underestimating the power of this forum?

Anyone done something similar or have some insight into what I might be in store for. I'd rather not get 200 articles deep only to find out the shit isn't going to rank.

It can be done, I did it. Your best bet is to target keywords that have very low results if you search them in quotes. You will be lucky sometimes and end up on the front page, sometimes top 3. The thing is by doing this your site won't gain authority, you can gain PR but no authority. And you want authority for this. So build quality high PR backlinks for your domain while posting and in time you will see nice results.
