I want to start a forum with phpBB as part of a site... don't want to pay for vBulletin until it proves to be a worthy concept on the site.

Is it easy to migrate the data from phpBB to vBulletin (members, categories, posts) so you can keep the content? Or is this even possible?

I believe there is a 'converter' which you can download after you purchase vbulletin that will pull the phpbb data and write it into vbulletin data.

I have done it several times. It is very easy to do. They even have a nice 404 tool that will auto-magically redirect urls from phpbb to vbulletin.

Yeah, I've done it. Was kind of a pain took a few hours plus wasted time configuring the forum. If you are really pressed for cash take the phpboard route. Otherwise just go straight to vB, it really saves a ton of hassle.

I know you're not asking for suggestions...but I'll give you one anyway. Have you tried www.MyBBoard.com

It works/looks/acts like VB, just FREE.
