You mean from a domainers point of view or an seo point of view?

I have a generic two word .jp that does ok in the SERPS but I don't know that it would be worth much as a domain on its own.

Be careful when dealing with languages that don't use the Roman alphabet. There is often more than one way of 'translating'. (eg, Koran/Qur'an, or Ko/Koh - Thai for island... something I was looking it in this area)

It's also worth bearing in mind how words are said by the native speakers, e.g. labiere.com or lebiere.com (My French is shit - can never remember if something is le or la) I believe German has 3 forms - masculine, feminine and neutral.

There's definitely big opportunities there, but if you don't speak the language be careful you don't get it wrong and waste money!

And yes, german has 3 forms. We use them to confuse foreigners.
We also use different grammar when talking to someone we do not know or in higher/official position.
Bureaucracy German "Buerokratendeutsch" has its very own, crisp beauty.

I second that, LH. The longer the Thai word, the more variety of of ways to spell it. I wanted to capitalize on the jatukarn amulets frenzy, but then I started doing google searches to see how many spellings and they had chatukam, jatukham, jatukharm, etc, you get the idea? close to a dozen ways that people could choose to spell.

I'm out of Thailand now.
 
Use google trends to help figure out which version of a foreign word or phrase to buy. You still have to be careful but it's better than shooting in the dark if you can't get a native speaker.
 
I remember studying German a while back, and the form for clothing words really got me confused. You see a womens skirt would take a masculine form, while a mans pair of pants would take on a feminine form... wierd.
