People who don't live in the west, what do you do for unrestricted internet?

Is there a reason I should get something other than an SSH tunnel to one of my servers?

Every country has different laws. What country are you going to?

You probably only need to be concerned if you're going to a strict Muslim country in the Middle East (or China). Otherwise, the rest of the world has the same internet as the West. :)

In SE Asia, you're fine. I guess in Thailand some porn tube sites are blocked, but other than that, the internet is just as open as the West.

The only country you may want to look into is Vietnam, as it is a Socialist Republic, so I'm not sure, but they may have restrictions. Otherwise, I've spent time in basically all SE Asia countries, and you're fine. Even if Islamic Malaysia, you're fine.

VPN is enough. It'd be more down to the tunnel provider at that point, but just go with a logless provider out of the jurisdiction of your destination.

Why not use a server I'm already paying for? Assuming I'm doing nothing the west currently has a problem with.

Then your own server is fine, just install a vpn server and you are ready to go. Advantage of vpn over ssh is that it encrypts your hole internet traffic without configuring each application, so you are safe when connecting from public hotspots, hotels etc.

Again, you'll be fine out in SE Asia. Internet is not restricted here, and if what you're doing isn't getting you in trouble in the West, it's not going to get you in trouble here.

Although it is a good idea to have a VPN with an IP of your home country for online orders. If you purchase some domains or something, do it through your VPN. Otherwise, the order gets marked as fraud, and you have to waste 30 mins of your life on the phone with customer support to let them know the order is legit. That's literally the only issue I've ever had in SE Asia though.
