Hey hey domainers,

For domain names outside of North America, is it more beneficial to have:

.com.(country)tld or .(country)tld ?

And I know there's a lot more to ranking besides the actual domain name itself - but besides all that, of the 2 above are there any rules of thumb / benefits of choosing one over the other ?

Thanks for any replies!

Depends on many things from the country, native langauge, acceptance or hippness of .coms, and desireability of the country specific.

Usually the country specifics have better names still avail.

Also depends on the laws of the country. Some dont let you register with out an address or local tax number as well.

Very complicated question actually.

cool thanks!

yeah, I haven't totally investigated it yet. But I do see a great name avail for what I need to do in both .co.jp and .jp (japan)

GDaddy sells .jp but not .co.jp

I also wonder, if your site (.jp or .co.jp) becomes popular will it just rank better in google japan or can it actually rank in the main google . com

any thoughts on this?

I have very little experience with domaining, but I have some .de domains and I'm telling you it's a huge fucking pain.

My name servers aren't working right (not sure why I don't have much expertise in the field) and it's generally a pain to set up. I'll probably just go with regular .com instead of .de from now on to save the hassle.

Can't say much about ranking it but make sure you won't have the technical difficulties I have (I'm hosting with godaddy too).
