What do you do during your boring work days to do your research?

My company blocks most sites I try and visit (even google's keywords tool) and so when I don't have anything to do at work I only have a few options:

1) I use Six of Spades » Arbitrage Niche Explorer created by a WF member. Give me a good indication of what sort of volume I will see - if there is good 7search volume you can be pretty sure that there will be good volume across the board. It also give me a good estimate of the adwords CPC and what is being bid in 7search for that kw and related kws

2) I also use the oveture tool which allows you to see the advertisers bids - I don't have the url here at home, but I will edit this tomorrow to include it.

3) So I pretty much sit there and type in things all day when I have a spare min or two. I just think of things people use often, or things that you wouldn't know about without an experts help, or expensive items that are hard to find, etc. Anything that returns a good result I send in an email to myself (I can't get on hotmail, etc. either) from my work email and include all of the niches I have found. Then I make the arb pages for those sites when I get home.

That's pretty much all I can do other than read WF at work - I do the same w/ cool ideas I read on here- email them to myself so I don't forget them, and bookmark them at home.

Anyone else have good ideas for someone who can't install programs on the computer (I would love to have a keyword tool on my PC at work)?

Don't use the boobs icon if there are no boobs.

I have the same problem, so I do more planning and stuff than anything.

ya but normall those programs u gotta install. But i use logmein.com :) u can install on your home pc and then access it via any web browser. Its great for when I dont have my pc. + its free

I use remote desktop, but then I work in the IT department...As far as online tools:

Google AdWords Keyword Tool
Overture Bid Tool
MSN AdCenter
7Search Keyword Tool
Custom built Excel spreadsheet (I think Google does online spreadsheets...)

Thanks for plugging the Arbitrage Niche Explorer. Too bad it wasn't long lived, the new 7search captcha put an end to it. I don't think we'll bother trying to crack the new captcha either, I'm having a hard time reading it even though I'm human :)

awww that blows! i used that almost everyday...

can't use logmein.com - it is blocked. I am thinking to trying to use Psiphon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia to link to my home computer from work- not sure if it will work yet.

I can install some basic programs to my temp drive - they sometimes work, sometimes don't. I have installed good keywords, but that program isn't my problem- I would love to be able to run my keyword elite program from here since that shit is sloooow.

If you look around enough, all of the tools in good keywords, and most in other paid programs are online for free. look around the net and you can find tools that will help you out.
I do all my research at work, and sometimes even put the sites up from work.

Well, I PMed Reefer with this ... but I thought I might as well post it here too....

I have a way of getting round your companys blocks Well, it worked for me anyway.

First of all, you need a USB Memory stick (may work on an ipod too)!

Next you download portable firefox. Not all of the versions available work .. so I just uploaded the version I use at rapidshare:

RapidShare: 1-Click Webhosting

You need to unrar it, and add the folder to your memory stick (must be in the main directory).

Now, run the file called 'PortableFirefox'. It will take a while to load, but when it does...

You have a portable version of firefox that will unblock EVERY SITE that your company has blocked. Your company will be none the wiser...

There you go Hope I've helped =]

How does just portableFirefox get around the web filtering that scans all port 80 traffic? From my experiences, the only way around that is to locate a non port-80 proxy. However, constantly changing proxies gets to be a pain in the ass.

I don't know about all that port 80 stuff :D

I'm just telling you what worked for me, which hopefully will work for you. It gets past every single block for me!

Then your company is using a very poor filter.

I work in a bank, and all internet traffic goes through THEIR proxy. They just blacklist domains and even kill access based on a "bad word" list.

So brandspankingnew.com is blocked as porn.

Argh..

They also block proxies. And they are quite quick about it.
