Remember when flash was mega popular as splash pages? You would go to hte site see a flash animation running - often it would take a really long time to load up the you would click it and get either a full flash site or a site was left a lot to be desired after teh flash intro.

Do you think there is a place for flash animations in today's web sites? If yes where? If not, why not?

I would say No.

My reason for saying this is because flash content is mostly inaccessible to screen-readers and search-engines alike. (although they're working on this)

And then, what if the user doesn't have the required plugin?

They're also an extra click or hinderance to the user (please include a "skip intro" link)

But on the other hand, they may prove to be an engaging fresh expereince to the user!

So I would recommend going for some kind of hybrid page, with links to the site's main areas, below the flash movie.. next to that skip button. ;)

I think flash has a massive future for website creation. It has moved from strength to strength with each version becoming a full OOP programming language with AS.

Basically the search engines are holding it back as they didn't cater for this technology and it's popularity but it's only a matter of time before that changes.

Personally I really like Flash and what it will mean for the future creating totally dynamic and interactive websites.

rembrandt, I disagree

microsoft are bringing out a new design mark-up language called XAML

It's a bit like css/html/js on steroids in an open format (xml) that is much easier to digest than macrodobia's closed format.

As much of a fan as flash as I am, the new format is really going to damage html, pdf and flash.

It's great to use for site elements, but not often an entire site...unless it's targeting a niche that it fits (example: graphic design/ site developement).

If Microsoft's previous records are anything to go by I wouldn't be too worried about that.

I know, I know, I'm not a big Microsoft fan so I'm a bit biased... well maybe alot biased.

I think flash has a (small) place for developing funky banners that get better CTR.

But I hate sites made entirely of flash or even with a splash page so much that I will always press the back button immediately when i find one.

I think some flash sites are better than the typical html sites. It just depends on how it is done.

It's laggy, not as accessible, bandwidth-intensive compared to alternatives, annoyingly implemented, I could whip reasons out all day...

Flash is good for 3 things: applications in web pages, 2d movies, and games. Those are the only 3 things that I can imagine using it for.

That could be said for thousands of html sites too.
