Experience with Zedo Adserver?

Hey guys,

We're looking into and choosing an adserver. We've talked to all the top players and gotten quotes from all the ones we've vetted.

Zedo has come in real low in cost compared to the big 3, but I'm looking for anyone's experiences with Zedo to confirm that the lower cost won't come with disadvantages.

Specifically,

1) Is it likely that we'll be just as capable of convincing the large ad networks to bill of Zedo's numbers as we would be off DART, Atlas or Mojo?

2) Will we miss out on any specific technologies that the others offer and Zedo doesn't? Engagement Mapping from Atlas, for example.

We're looking at Zedo costing potentially 1/3 the others, so they're pretty tempting. We're trying to make a decision soon.

Thanks in advance for any experiences.

Honestly, you get what you pay for with Zedo. I've used Zedo on and off over the past three years and the optimization capabilites are less than stellar. You have to weight your creative manually.

If you are in the market, I'd also suggest looking at Yield Manager. They've come a long way with their adserver and exchange in the past year. I'm really impressed with their creative optimization and it seems to match most other numbers. It's also about a third of the price of the big dogs. If you're running any DR campaigns, it's a definate consideration. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot, that's super helpful. We hadn't looked at YieldManager, we'll check them out.

Also thanks for the heads up about creative optimization through Zedo.

Zedo is certified for many major networks so you should be allowed to run it in most cases. But you can always ask your ad rep for a list of certified adservers. It all depends on the network, some are more flexible than others and will run any standard looking ad tag.

Most companies will allow you to certify your adserver but this can be a pain in the ass because the process can be lengthy. You'll likely need to sign an ad serving agreement and they'll stress test your server by serving millions of fake impressions per hour. Also, there can be really big fines for liquidated damages if they are running your tags and your adserver goes down. So know wtf your doing, don't be the idiot who runs openx on a shared hosting account.

My First questions is why are you getting the adserver? (working with agencies etc..)

If you pretty much deal with only agencies that are sticklers on reporting, go with with dart.

-Atlas interface sucks, but large agencies run it (Avenue A, Drive PM, Media Edge) and it is almost a standard in the agency ad serving world. They also run many RFP's by being registered within their system.

-Check out Ad Juggler - I've used it and really liked its options.

-Right Media is great source to, and it also gets you access to the exhange. (may or may not be useful to you)

- I've done a demo with Zedo, didn't care to much for it.

- Have heard good things about BanManPro.com

- Google Ad server is out, depending on your needs it may be a great free solution.

You can also run you own version of openx (we are currently running a 5 box cluster, so far not many issues but PIA if you don't have a dedicated developer for it). They have also released their API, its complicated, but with a developer you can do what ever you would like with it.

PM me if you have any other specific questions.

Keep in mind, billing off your numbers is not going to be automatic. Most places are not going to want to give you that no matter what Ad Server you're using. Most, however, will not even consider it if you don't have an IAB Certified (not Compliant) server.

You will have to negotiate this clause in your contract. The more money you have to spend, the better your chances.

Sometimes you have to settle for a discrepancy clause of x%.

Yes.. always discrepancy .. Yield Manager was constantly 10%+ lower in the numbers
