Semi serious question but do you ever feel like much off your affiliate marketing success is down to luck? I’ll give you an example i started this business about 2 years ago and the first four sites i built are still making 90% of my income. I mean its great that they are making me money but since nothing in the last year has actually worked im feeling more and more that i dont know what im doing at all and the whole thing (google) is just to random to fully comprehend.

Suppose this sounds like I’m bitching and i suppose there is a lack of motivation on my part, after all if google was easy to work out then everyone would be makin the moonies. So my real question is do any of you guys get to the point where you feel confident that you understand completely what google is doing/going to do, ie enough to build a business around it? Or are you always going to be flying by the seat of you pants no matter what?

It was exactly the same with me until a few months ago. My first 4 sites were making 90% of my money. It all came down to my mindset and I had to think back to what I was doing right back then and try to kind of recreate it.

In my case it came down to me dabbling in too many new techniques as I learned more about IM, and playing around with "short cuts" rather than just putting in solid work. Back when I knew nothing about IM, all I could do was stick to the one basic method I knew and hammer that shit all day. And that worked quite well.

I think it's the age factor fucking with you. Especially recently age is really becoming a major pain in the ass with Google.

2 years is more than enough time if you've had enough quality aged links with accurate anchor text, for the most part.. For instance, you get enough natural 1-way bl's from a great article with good kw's, more often than not, you'll start ranking high for most moderately competitive terms within 6-12 months. That's my experience at least.

So if you're really serious about a particular project and want to ensure success, consistently focus on good content and building the most natural links as possible while minding kw's.

I think about this everyday. 80% of my monthly income is from sites that are a couple years old and have had great rankings for a long time. 3 sites do the bulk of the earning, and I've yet to reproduce that good of results with any projects since. Crazy thing was, those 3 were really my first attempts at SEO and making moniez online. Was it luck, I don't think so. I used good, solid methods at the time, but Google is so dynamic that finding that lightening in a bottle again is something that you have to constantly work and adapt to. I'll get there again with more sites. And then Google will change again...and so the game continues.

I can still SEO sites and get good rankings, but those 3 just killed it with so many keywords, and continue to do so. (knock on wood), but I'm always thinking that I'm going to loose my SERP's and not be able to get them back again. The one reassuring thing that I tell myself is that the longer those sites stick around the top, the more age they get under their belt, and the harder it will be for them to get knocked down. Google loves age.

Hopefully, as my newer projects get some time on their side, along with my continuing SEO, they'll move their way up, lock in, and really do some damage. If I could have 6-8 sites doing what those original 3 currently do. I'd easily be doing $1200 a day, with sites on near auto-pilot. That's what I strive for.

Yes this is a deffinite, i really think they have increased the sanbox time. Ie my current site is 6 months old with good content and lots of legit (and not so legit) links (its PR4) yet is knowhere.
