[SIZE=-1]Of Spanish domain names, .es has 43 percent and .com 42 percent. Third comes .net with some 128000 registrations.

Anyone on here being registering .es and if so have you been regsitering spanish / english words or both.

Interesting stuff......

Last I read, they are giving .es free to everyone under 30.

Well spotted, i had a quick look and found....

Red.es has initiated a program to give away domains to anyone under the age of 30 in an effort to boost Spanish internet usage. Under 30s in Spain can register a domain name for free, says the public institution responsible for promoting the internet. . . . .

The Spanish Consejo de Ministros adopted these measures to boost internet usage in Spain.

That explains it then........

I think it could be a good thing. There was so much public outcry about how the value of .info domains be reduced when affilias gave away one year for free. Just see what has happened - it is now far more popular than other extensions.

Another issue is that the most popular extension -- from my knowledge of the region -- is .com.es. So just like Indian ccTLDs - .in and .co.in -- they will always have a branding problem.

Hmm.. 2 years ago, .es was very restricted (needed official approval etc).
That was why it was easier for a lot of people to go .com instead.

Seems they changed it.
