If someone writes a story, and places it on ezines, and then places it on thier blog, is this considered duplicate content and cause you to have a penalty as far as google is concerned for thier blog site?

Personally I would think it would be better to place it on your blog first before ezine, unless your just copying content from popular articles, but yes I do believe it does affect how google views your blog if it has duplicate content on it. But how hard is it really to spend about 15-20 minutes to rewrite and change the article?

first place your content on your web site
wait some time to be indexed by google

and then place on ezine

Dup content only applies to content on your site. Say if you post the same article in two places on the same site. But I don't have any problem ranking articles off ezines for competitive keywords.

So your saying having the same content on different pages of your site is the big no no, where having an article on ezines and your website is ok?

tomahawkeer, if you want long term good rankings avoid duplicate content as much as you can, your content should be unique (and useful)!!! if we speak about your money blog/site, in case of splogs/feed/autoblogs try at least to synonimize/rewrite your content, it help!

Place the content on your site or blog first then start to spread the word around the web. In this way you can be sure that Search Engines will recognize that the content was first placed on your site and then spread to other sites.

Exactly.

Other than that there is no duplicate content issue. Big G only penalizes when it´s on the sme website. Think about content syndication.... all big sites present the same news for example... and that´s not considered dup content at all.

What about when the content is in a post and again in the sidebar text widget?

Also, if you use the same content for an ezine article that you used on your site, won't you be competing against yourself in the SERP?

This should be your concern.

Whether you put it on your site first or not, when the big G finds two pages with identical content, the tie goes to the stronger page. Ezines has a lot of links built to it and a lot of indexed pages... it will beat you out in the SERPS.

Just rewrite the article. It doesn't take long and you'll be better off for it.

Definitely post on your blog first - that's the site you want Google to credit with being the original publisher. Depending on how long it takes to get that new post indexed (might be a few days) then you can head off to content farms (like ezines) and start making backlinks/driving traffic to the blog.

When you're spinning articles, always re-write the title and 1st paragraph, keeping your keywords in them both. Then you can go and and mix it up throughout the rest of the article - switch synonyms, delete one sentence, add another somewhere else. Or think about changing WHO you are writing to (eg, one article targeting men, the other targeting women). Or turn your "Five things you should know about [keyword]" article into a "Pro's & Con's of [keyword]" article using the same content as the foundation. Recycling at it's finest! This also changes your word count.

BUT, it doesn't really matter once Google has indexed your post - that's the original. The only real penalty you'll encounter is having duplicate content on the same website (or blog in this case).

If it's only an excerpt, it shouldn't be a problem. I've done something similar on one of my sites and never had any search engine issues. Algorithms changes, though, and duplicate content can get you into so much trouble with Google. These days, I don't have even a couple of sentences of content that's identical.

These guys are right.

First of all, "duplicate" means exact same, identical content. IDENTICAL!

Not just the article, the entire source code, css, js, all that shit would need to be identical.

But, no one is actually talking about IDENTICAL content.

Therefore, we must be talking about similiar content. Similiar content is
all over the web, you haven't seen any? wow!

I see it everyday in the news, tutorials, etc etc.

But people will continue to fear the "dupe content" ghost because
they need something to fear. The fear energizes them and adds drama to
their life. It also provides justification for their failure.

I just wanna say simply avoid pasting duplicate content anywhere on net, Google bots are so powerful they will catch hold of it and it will drastically effect your main site.

Simply take 30 min of your time write unique appealing content and post it on Ezine.
Ezine is an humungous article directory, if your content is new and appealing, then from ezine itself your going to get tons of traffic .

30 min = tons of traffic

Duplicate content also counts for tags and categories, right? So if I put a blog post in the "travel" category and then also tag it as "travel," that'll count as duplicate content and I'll get penalized.
