So I'm thinking about going dual 30"s but I'm not sure if it's going to make it twice as bad for my eyes.

Does anybody know any supporting evidence on linking the radiation to vision problems/cancer/etc? Because two bright ass Apple HD 30"s will light up my entire house pretty much.

Dim the brightness on the screen... Yes, it will hurt your eyes after a while if you are staring at 2 30" screens at the same time for a long time period.

wear shutter shades and you are protected:

But in all seriousness the problem with large monitors and eyestrain comes from the fact that we are better at reading narrow columns of text, and since people tend to maximise their windows they get eyestrain due to really wide columns on a wide monitor.

With CRT's there was the fear of the fact that a cathode ray tube was actually hurling radiation at the glass, and some of it was going to affect your eyes.

With LCD's the problem is not really relevant any longer any more, you should be more worried about radiation being emitted from your gigahertz processor.

So in conclusion follow the OH and S procedures available online in regards to lighting your workspace, stick to narrow columns on your webpages and you should be fine.

May I ask what you need dual 30"'s for? I had a 30" at work and it was fine for c# .net programming, I could even work on two solutions side-by-side or have outlook, a web browser and my IDE Open. At home I have a 24" and I find it sufficient to my needs most of the time, but I also have an old 17" lcd attached to my PC that I use to read email. I couldn't imagine needing 2 30"'s

Apple monitors are awesome, but can be very bright. I have my brightness set at the lowest setting, and even then I had to get a little program called "shades" that would darken it further. I stare at it all day so it was starting to get to me. Everything is good now though.

Dual 30s might be a bit overkill bro. Why not get a Dell Ultrasharp 20" and flip it vertically, AFAIK it should line up with your ACD 30 perfectly and provide a bit more extra screen space for a lot less money.

On a related note, does anyone ever get flashies in the corner of their vision? I notice it happens when I've been staring at a computer for a long time. More so when the backgrounds are white. (more reasons to stay on wf!!) I asked a friend who's an ophthalmologist but he just shrugged and says "it happens".

I don't know. I'm still waiting to have one big flash and then go blind.

That can be of the symptoms of a retina that is detached. How long has it been happening?

I get that too, it could be a symptom of a detached retina.

LoL I work with my two screens now for a long time and so far I didn't got any problems with my vision or eyes. I would love to have 2 30" screens on my table.

Bro, radiation is next to nil. I don't care if you got 57 monitors stacked up whatever way. All eye strain/damage is ergonomic. Hell driving long distances regularly will fuck your eyes up...just make sure that you have another source of light to diffuse whatever light the screen is emitting to reduce some strain. And start doing eye exercises every 6 hours as taught by this goob. lmao.

I agree with Cakes, get 24's. I just posted mines in the office setup thread lol. You should worry more about lumbar and neck support more than anything else though. You don't want to be a hunchback by the time you're 30.

Been rocking 2 30" monitors for over a year now. Doesn't hurt my eyes, even on max brightness. My roommate rocks 4 of them, no problem there either.

Just have some backlighting/area lighting -- don't have them all on max in a pitch black room. Even that though, pretty questionable if it'll damage -- just will strain perhaps.

LCDs don't put off "radiation" in the CRT sense. Yeah, there's some electromagnetic radiation as with running any electronic gear, but it just isn't the same thing.

I don't know of any studies that say that a two monitor setup is worse on the eyes, but I do know of several that say a dual monitor setup will make you up to 50% more productive.

Dual 30"s, might be a bit wide, but if had enough video card (ie. MAX res x 2) I would be up for it for sure. As it is I am rocking a 21" and 24".

I actually have two 30 inch screens hooked up. Here is my advice:

Don't just sit in the middle of the two screens (like most people do with smaller screens) This will give you HUGE eye strain. Sit directly in front of one screen and have the 2nd 30 on the side. I dunno exactly why... but this reduces strain big time.

Is it worth it?

Hell YA!!! forget 50% increase in productivity... think 400%... here is why:
Imagine having dreamweaver, photoshop, web browser, FTP all open at once. This allows you to just throw things around really fast.

For regular stupid work you get a 50% increase. For affiliate campaign building and optimizing its more like 400%.

I uploaded a pic of my setup so you can see what i mean by having one 30 on the side. Btw samsung 30's are better then the apple screens.
