Does anyone know a way to research the history of a domain's ownership?

I have seen tools like WaybackMachine and some of the tools on domaintools, but I am looking for more indepth info, like actual whois owner info and not just IP addresses.

On that same note, I am also looking for a history of domain sales, like something that keeps track of public sales of domains, their purchase prices, etc...

Any suggestions?

DomainTools actually does offer that WHOIS history service -- their records go back to the mid-1990s.

For historic name sales I recommend NameBio.

DomainTools has whois history dating back to around 2001 I think?

And there isn't a good public resource for public domain sales. The best you're going to do is namebio, dnsaleprice, dnjournal, or your google searches.

DT's records go back to the mid-1990s, as I said.

Have you been to NameBio lately? They've significantly upgraded in the last six months or so. I realise that they are not exhaustive, but the data they provide is in a whole different class from dnsaleprice and dnjournal imo. I know you have some experience with domaining -- would be interested in your opinion.
