My wife is a "consultant" for a fairly popular newish product. As result she has her own website so to speak, www.product.com/wifesname. I want to get her a proper domain name, but its against to TOS to us said product name in the URL. The main keyword/product name only has about 150,000 competing pages and most longertail keywords are 50,000 or less. Should I get a URL directed towards a longtail keyword or a URL with a more rememberable name and just SEO the shit out of it?

I'd go with a rememberable name, because the domain name isn't that important for SEO. Get good high quality backlinks to your website with the keyword in the anchor text and you should rank on top in no time.

Is it the only thing she is ever going to consult on?

If not, how about wifesname.com but using lots of product keywords, link to it from www.product.com/wifesname and get lots of 'product name' anchor text in links pointing to 'wifesname.com' That way she can brand herself as a consultant in various areas, and her domain will be aged if she goes into different areas later.

150,000 competing sites? Too easy, go to digitalpoint, namepros, sedo etc and buy an aged domain that's already indexed. Buy a PR4 link or two ($10 - $20 per month), 1k directory submissions, some social bookmarking and you'll crush it.
