Domain API

Does anyone know of a service that as an API that will let you query domain names and see what is registered, expiring, unregistered, etc?

a quick search on google did find a few. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=domain+api&btnG=Search but it seems you need to be a reseller account. It kinda makes sense.

further search came up with http://www.nott.org/blog/php-whois-script.html not a domain api, but a whois look up script. Probably more along the lines of what you might need.

That's exactly what I'm looking for. Too bad it's only 100 free queries a day, but that better than nothing!
