Do you need to use advertiser hosted images/pixels?

For example for text, they give you the following code:

<img src="http://www.site.com/image-#####-######" width="1" height="1" border="0"/>

And for banner ads its:
<a href="http://www.site.com/click-#####-#######" target="_top">
<img src="http://www.site.com/image-#####-######" width="468" height="60" alt="Tire Rack.com" border="0"/></a>

Do I have to place those images on my site? Or is that just a way for advertiser to track impressions, that I'm not required to use?
