Do you give back (charity)

I try to give 5% of my income from any work I do to charity. Sometimes I give a little more if things are going really well.

Do you really think charity gets that big a slice of the tax dollars?

Some people can;t work - as in physically unable to work and need charity.

I don;t know about America but here in Australia the government gives next to nothing to charity - they need all the help they can get

I work in group homes for physically and mentally disabled, and mentally ill adults and children. The goverment here in the US provids basic care with donations and family sometimes fill in the gaps.

If people only realized how many jobs one disabled person can provide to a city! There is group home staff, program coordinators, job coaches, psychiatrists, office workers (from the companies that support the residential programs, work programs, etc.) and the list goes on.

When they have money for recreation, its spent in the community (they rarely have funds for travel).

Sadly, without help from welfare, most women can't afford to support their children and provide insurance with jobs that pay a little above minimum wage.

Hey, if we all took care of a neighbor or two in need, there would be no use for the government's help!

I read an interview with Warren Buffet shortly after he announced he was giving all that money away to Bill Gates. People accused him of being stingy, he said early on that he realised early on it made more sense to keep the money and grow it than give it away, because he could grow it so much larger.

Even with a pretty average ROI (6%), every $10,000 will turn in to $130,000 in 45 years. Manage a high return (15%) and that $10,000 is over $5 million... in other words, the younger you are the less you should donate to charity.
