Has anyone had luck with adding a PayPal donation button or one of those Amazon Honor System deals to their site or blog? I heard some bad stuff about PayPal not paying up and closing accounts, which sounds typical of them. What has been your experience?

I've never heard of him. Does he have any authority to make such a recommendation?

Hes done very well for himself as an independent game developer, and now works as a motivational speaker. Cant say about his authority on web development, but hes pretty well known.

As to if they work, I would think if you're going to put adsense or other ads, I dont know that a donation button would be effective.

They never worked for me, but if you provide a decent service you'd probly get donations. Xoops gets quite a few i believe.

Steve Pavlina is pretty well known in professional blogging circles too - I think his blog made a killing and he posted the adsense cheque somewhere (or something like that - kind of like what Jon did.

I enjoy his stuff about blogging, but I am not really into the whole "motivation" and self improvement thing.

Another thing is I like to watch what people like him DO rather than what they SAY to do.

You would defiantly need to be providing quality content or a service to make it work. I know I wouldn't donate unless I was getting something useful back in return.

Would entertainment value be enough. Take, for instance, Overheard in New York or Stuff on my Cat. Would you find them to be donation worthy?

I think it would be different from person to person. One person might think it's defiantly worthwhile but another might think it's not. :)

They work best on forums, and sites that provide free services.

I'm interested to learn why you think that they are better suited to forums than blogs. I can see why they would work well with sites offering free services, though. I imagine the guilt factor would kick in on that one.

I'm sure they work on blogs too. As long as you're blogging about something of interest/value to people, and you have a following, then yeah.
