I have a couple of websites I haven't used over the past couple of years.

The host was Verio. I think the nameserver is located in Melbourne, Australia.

I have them in an account with Network Solutions and would like to get more control over them.

How do I do this?

When I was in NetSol today and looked into a transfer option, I got......

Existing Name Servers
ns1.secure.net
ns2.secure.net

New Name Servers
ns##.worldnic.com
ns##.worldnic.com (## will be assigned upon clicking Go)
How do I move these domains? Any help would be appreciated.

Thx.

Just for clarification, are you wanting to change hosting companies or change registrars (AKA domain transfer)?

To transfer the domain, you need to open an acct with the registrar you want to move them to and use the new registrar to make the transfer. You may also have to go through some verification/confirm procedures with netsol before they actually do the transfer, so make sure your contact emails/other info is up to date.

To change hosts, you just need to change the nameservers to whatever your host tells you to use, or set up your own custom ones.

@jryan21

Thanks for replying and the input.

None of these domains are hosted anywhere right now.

I'm just confused as to what I should do first.

I'm also interested in nothing getting screwed up in a transfer attempt.

I'm thinking that I should get everything organized first within NetSol, before getting them to a better host.

Well, the DNS servers are a non-issue at this point. If you want to move them to Godaddy or Namecheap or something then go read on their websites how to transfer the domains. Netsol is not the easiest to transfer from (at least from what I recall).

I don't think it is clear yet on what you are trying to do though. Are they just parked domains right now? And you want to develop the sites into real websites now? Or do you want to move to another domain registrar.

There are some very important technologies to understand when you are dealing with domains. DNS is Domain Name System. It is basically the 411 of the internet. Each server has to have a unique IP address. Well who can remember all of the numbers to get to a website/server resource? Words are easier for most people to remember so DNS was created. DNS basically takes your domain name and looks up the IP address and returns that value to the requesting program.

The purpose of a domain registrar is two fold. One it allows you to own and control a domain name. From a technical standpoint it is the service that announces to the Top Level Domain servers the correct DNS server to go to when someone is trying to lookup the IP Address information of your server for your domain name.

DNS Servers are the servers that provide the look up information. They are basically the operators of the internet. Having every domain name server on the internet keep your information stored in all of their databases would be a nightmare. So when you configure your domains through your Domain Registrar you setup the DNS servers that are responsible for keep track of all your DNS records. So technically unless you have your own DNS severs on the internet you will need to use a service like xname.org or nettica.com. One is free, one is paid. I recommend a paid one that is for sure. Once you have your domain name servers setup and configured for your domain names ( that is a whole other ball game. It is complex and you shouldn't do it unless you know what you are doing or you don't care if your site is hosed ) then you can add them to your Domain Registrars account and everything should be good after that.

They both relate to DNS, but there is a distinct difference in what each service provides. Knowing exactly what you are trying to do will help decide your next steps...

@fholmes, thanks for the reply

I appreciate the info. My problem is that I know websites and not domains and registration issues.

I think I am more worried about screwing something up.

I want to re-register these domains from CompanyABC to CompanyXYZ and not screw it up.

My old host (verio), I thought had them registered elsewhere. But they are not. They are all with NetSol.

I want to re-register the ownership within Netsol and then transfer them elsewhere to be either parked, developed or sold.

To get ownership of the domain within Network Solutions, you wll need to request a local transfer with them, with most registerers the process involves the current owner of the domain pushing the domain into another user's account, with NetSol, it's a pull.

Anyhow, follow the link below which takes you to the Network Solutions' website which has a step by step guide on how to do this (for some reason they hide such information in the depths of the site).
