it's not much but if you still want an iPhone then you might want to try this:
Go to your local AT&T store and purchase any discounted phone with a regular contract. Then go to an Apple store and purchase the iPhone but don't activate it. When you get home, call AT&T and ask them to transfer the iPhone to your existing AT&T plan, they'll make you add the unlimited data plan but they will not make you extend your contract.
You can now sell the discounted phone on ebay or keep it in until your iphone battery dies
Places like Amazon have great discounts but the phones have a contract that prohibits you from making any changes to your contract for 180 days (or something similar to that).. which means you can't transfer the phone. Most AT&T store contracts don't have that clause.
