Directory Scripts - Alternative to Ezydir?

It's been a few years (ok, 8) since I considered running a directory, but now I've got an idea for a directory that needs a solid, stable CMS for B2B use.

Ezydir & eDirectory both look overkill, however, and plans start around $399. Fuck that noise, my needs are far more simple... I just want it to look good.

I'm tempted to make it work on a WP blog with the Vantage Theme, but it doesn't seem quite enough, nor does it look impressive enough.

Anyone know what platform I should be using? This site will require the following functionality:

1. Businesses can list their biz for free through forms.
2. Bizzes already listed (by me) can create an account & take control of their listing.
3. User reviews for directory listings.
4. Votes for directory listings.
5. A featured listing area on the main page highlights the listings of my choice. (Bonus: Voter's choice.)
6. Other pages on the site can be added manually that show up in the NAV menu.
7. Skinnable. I really want this to look A+++ professional.

Thanks for all input!

Umm... Something like this?
WordPress - Directory Portal Wordpress Theme | ThemeForest

Has integration with google maps (size can be easily increased/decreased/replaced with something like {a quick sign up for may be})?

2. Bizzes already listed (by me) can create an account & take control of their listing.

I am assuming this would mean an existing listing can be "claimed" by a user. Something like this

or this

Shouldn't be too hard to code into the above theme - every page can carry a sub-ID/Listing ID which can be fed into the form when they Claim it and Sign up - this data is then passed to you and you can then verify and approve/deny the claim.

But then that feature alone might run up to the cost you're not looking to pay with the other two directories.

I love it... More than worth the $55 they are asking for. Thanks a heap!

Either would do, latter preferred.

Are you sure that they don't have this functionality already?

Also, they mention the "revolution slider" (Main story banner rotator) is included. My ultimate wish would be for user voting to choose which of the 5 businesses are in the revolution slider at any given time. (Most votes in the last 7 days or a settable criteria) Would that be hard to code in too?

Thanks!
Luke

Doesn't seem to appear in their demo at least. Nor did I find a mention anywhere in their feature list.

Also you might want to check this -

Just checked the reviews on the above theme, not worth it IMO. Lack of customization options.

Apparently, GeoTheme - Geo Wordpress Theme seems to do what you need and more.

For this, there will have to be a rating system integrated which would rank the winners image + name and description on the slider every day/week/forthnight/month etc.

Alternatively, you could add those manually at the end of every week.

that theme seriously kicks ass, been looking to implement it into a few different situations and it is just beautiful. only thing im not so sure of is how loading the maps api on-load every time is going to effect site load time. esp when you start adding in elements all over the country, etc.

As gorgeous as it is, the functionality is certainly lacking. Your other suggestion:

GeoTheme - Geo Wordpress Theme

Is also pretty, and does have all the functionality I could ask for... But it has this nagging issue of trying to make itself like Yelp too much, putting maps front and center on every page.

Frankly, I don't need maps at all... I'll let bizzes add one there on their own listing page but I don't want a map showing up anywhere else. :\

So this will take a little work to figure out if it can be tweaked to be what I need. But it's the best I have to go on so far, thanks again.

why use wordpress at all for it?

PHPLD has laods of themes and plugins
Frankly I'm not sold on using wordpress, but PhpLD is really ugly; Even all the downloadable themes they have there... Reminds me of something I made for netscape in 1992!

I'm going to have to see something more purty than that before I wade in and see if all the functionality I need exists in their plugins.

Wordpress already has tons of rating system plugins... I'm pretty sure there are some nice "5 star" systems that don't let the same IP address vote twice already, but what I don't have any clue about is how to make the ratings info from that plugin influence anything else... Would that take a serious hack job? Is it possible at all?
