So, I hired a web developer off odesk to do some work for me on my wordpress site (build a plugin from scratch & integrate for me).

First he told me he needed an ftp account so that he could access the files on my website, so i made an ftp account for him (the only ftp account i have ever created in my cpanel).

here's what he had to say:

The ftp account is ok, but i cant see any file or folder there, it means the account permission problem.
my friend, you dont need to create a file there. but the ftp a/c must point to your root directory of the site so that i can see the existing files after login.
So how do i do this last step he requested? i've tried googling it and cant find anything that answers my specific question.

Any help is appreciated!

You have a shared hosting account, I'm assuming?

Temporarily change your password, and give him your full cPanel account details. That's the only way he'll be able to take care of you. Even with an extra FTP account, he's not going to have write permissions to your existing files. You have to give him your login info.

PS. Another reason why I should remember to NEVER EVER do contract work again. Clients saying, "well, just do it through cPanel". Fuck you, do it through cPanel.

Yeah, I'd listen to Kiopa_Matt. If you can't make a temporary secondary admin account with full privs then the best bet would be to change your pw and allow him to use cpanel while he gets his work done.

I think what happened is when you create a new ftp user cpanel will create a new directory inside of the root or htmldocs folder and give it the name of the user. Since it's a new folder, there are not contents and that's why he didn't see anything.

You can go in and modify his home directory from that new created folder to the root(or htmldocs) folder.

Also take a look at the permissions/privileges to make sure he has access to what he needs.
