Diablo 3 Auction House will featured real-money transactions.

Been looking forward to D3 for ages. This is definitely a curveball. Endgame gear for chump change in "real life"--big potential to hurt the multiplayer experience. Blizz stands to make shittons of money with transaction fees, though, and there's definitely a demand for this sort of thing, so I can't blame em.

Still, the Diablo series is something I've grown up with. First one was amazing; Back in like '97, it set the bar for the genre as far as I'm concerned. Reminded me of ADOM or nethack but with immersive environments. Tristram theme still gives me goosebumps. Second one definitely lived up to the first. But when I saw gameplay vids for the third, I wasn't too enthusiastic... looks like WoW: point-and-click edition. Really hoping D3 doesn't follow suit with most other modern games (read: pure shit).

Maybe this is what getting old feels like.

I'm 50/50 on this.

This is kind of cool, but there should also be servers were you can't simply buy badass items and dominate the game just because you have $. Fat chance of that happening though. Blizzard will be leaving money on the table if they do this.

Like the dude above said, there's a potential that the game will lose its fun and "soul" and will become a meaningless grind for money and numbers, or maybe it won't who knows. But IMO games are supposed to be fun not laborious.

The thing is D2 already had lots of real money action with players selling items etc. on eBay and forums, so it wasn't like it wasn't happening already, I guess Blizzard are just cutting out the middle man and getting a cut of the action while providing an easier interface for the players. So win/win. If you want an example, just type in eBay.com "diablo 2 item pack"

They already have game farming sweatshops were some Chinese dudes get paid $5 a day to grind WOW gold, so you can bet your fucking ass its gonna happen for D3 at a larger scale since the first party actually have implemented a real world money system.

I'll probably get this game for sure, just because D1 & 2 were such awesome games, but will I buy a rare helm for $10? Probably not.

There will be two auction houses one for only gold and one for cash. You can also sell gold for cash. The value of gold will largely depend on the money sinks in the game. Diablo 2 gold was worthless whereas WoW gold had value since there was so much cool shit to do with it.

Likely what will happen is you will be playing a class and find a good item for another class and sell it for cash. Then your battle net account will have 10 bucks in it and since you're detached from the value of the money ala casino chips, you'll probably say what the fuck and buy a $10 helm for your character class.

Hell yes - cut out the middleman <insert 3rd world country here> farmers.

Yeah, it will give a HUGE middle finger to the gold farmers lol. Perhaps this is Blizzard's way of dealing with the situation AND making money from it at the same time.

I wonder if this gold/real currency idea will bleed over in the WoW auction house eventually. Not immediately of course, but maybe in a year or 2 down the road? Game is definitely getting stale, plus they are already doing a bunch of micro-transactions on vanity items.

can i sell items on it?

if so, that'll cut out the middle man for the china farmers, too.

The problem is that even with Warden, Blizzard won't be able to stop all of the MF bots or whatever D3 is going to have. I have several friends who bot on WoW and have been doing it for years without being caught and they do it just for the crazy achievements and "fun" gold sinks. With real money involved, people are gonna be all over this shit.

Agreed. They don't ban bots on WoW. It's a subscription model, they would be losing money. They claim they do to appease the masses, but they most definitely do not. I know people who bot their leveling/honor grind/whatever. And have been doing it for years. Blizzard hasn't done shit about it.

Who knows, though. Maybe when real money is involved they will get a bit more serious.
