Dedicated vs. Colocated

Does anyone have experience with colocated servers? Im trying to think down the road to a point where I will need my own dedicated box, and it seems for the long haul colocated would be the better value. Higher initial investment, but less expensive over the long haul.

Is there anything else I should know about these kind of host plans?
 


Typically colocation isn't really worth it. Calculate how much your server will cost, the cost of bandwidth. Then figure out how long it would take to incur that amount paying monthly to lease a dedicated server.

Then after that, figure how long your server will be actually in service for. With hardware getting faster and cheaper it may not be worth it to you.

What if you already own the server?
I've got the same question as titus1 but I've already bought the hardware.
 
I guess it depends on your server specs and how big your server is (how many u's does it take up)?

Then you probably want to pick a city close to where you live or where your tech lives if applicable so you can go in and work on your machine if need be.

Then decide what kind of network providers you want (not that you get to choose but you can choose your datacenter based on that)

Oh ok, yeah... unless you have a need for custom hardware, I just don't see colo as being all that cost effective. You have a 1U server lying around not doing anything then I guess, otherwise just go dedicated
 
Co-lo is good if you want very specific hardware on board. If you just want a dedicated server then go for one that is already out there.

Why go to the extra hassle of getting your server to the data center when they are already there for you
