I'm currently searching for my first dedicated server. I had narrowed it down to liquidweb, and theplanet, but after I heard the liquid web has much better service, I've decided on them.

My first question is whether you guys would go for a better processor (dual core, quad core, amd vs intel?) or would you just spend the extra money on extra RAM, and HD Speed. I'm thinking maybe a dual 73gb SCSI Raid setup.

I'm guessing the ram and HD speed would be a much better use of money, but I just don't have any experience with this.

I'm planning on running some larger vbulletin forums, and a bunch of modded WP blogs with heavy scripts running on them if that makes a difference.

One other question I had is at LiquidWeb, on bandwidth it will say for ex: 3200 GB (1600 in & 1600 out) where as theplanet will just say 3200GB. Is LW a worse deal because of that, or are they both the same, just with a little extra explanation by LW?

Thanks!

Josh

I'm a big fan of RAM.

You can't really compare LW and The Planet - LW is managed, I don't think the Planet is.

Before you purchase your dedi, look over at WebHostingTalk, there's usually a coupon for LW boxes over there (like $10 off a month or something)

Thanks for the quick response. I actually found a LW vs TP thread over at WebHostingTalk which is where I found out that a lot of people were unhappy with the service from TP. I will definitely go check it out again and try to find a coupon.

I always max out my home computers with RAM, and rarely care what the processor speed is, so I was kind of hoping servers would be the same deal.

The WP Blogs will be wallpaper sharing sites which is where the heavy scripts are coming from, and then the vbulletin forums of course. I'm sure by the end of it, I'll have a ton of different sites on there, but for right now I see those as being the two that will be really dependent on the server for speed and bandwidth.

Web Hosting Promo Codes have coupons for both LiquidWeb and The Planet.

Please leave some feedback when you've signed up. I'm considering a dedicated server myself, and I've been looking at the same two companies.
