ded server question

My buddy has a ded server and he offered it to me for free hosting.
Question- he only has 1 ip, and no real cpanel on it.
How the hell do I dns my domains? I had a friend upload windows ftp on it, but Im clueless how to get sites up.
Do I need another IP?

Depends on his setup, when you say "no real cpanel" do you just mean its not running a WHM/Cpanel setup? If so maybe it's running Plesk, or even webmin.

Or if his server actually has no automated setup, and its basically a bare server, then you need to work with the nameserver that box may be running (most of the time it's BIND), in which case you have to manually create a DNS zone for each new domain. (perhaps you could ask him now, since he's the server owner/admin and all).

Then course you'd have to modify the httpd.conf file to modify the virtualhost for those domains (hence how it manages several sites off one IP using name-based addressing).

and if he has a mailserver on there, you'll have to manually update dovecot or whatever he uses for a mail server.
