Im prepared to take a lot of heat for asking this, but fuck it - hopefully someone can set me straight on this..

Can you mine any of these crypto-currencies like ppcoin, namecoin, etc. on a single PC/laptop and actually accumulate a decent amount of them? (Im talking about the smaller more unknown coins not bitcoin or litecoin)

I'm still a total idiot on how this all works, but seeing as the market cap is pretty small for these alternative coins - is mining still a viable option? If so, for which coin?

additional question because I'm too lazy to google and you fellas are going to argue about it anyway over next 5 pages of this thread, so fuck Google and its inaccuracy:

do other cryptocurrencies require that special chip btc now needs to be mined? Or is a decent group of computers still enough to mine them?

You could have answered your own question in less time than it took to post boobs..

But boobs are good, I like boobs.

Look into mining pools. It's a great way to make 80 cents a day while using all of your computer's resources.

Far more profitable to steal $100m in BTC from drug dealers on a TOR site
Almost certainly more risky.

My 2 cents.
FTR - That asian bint is very rare in hip size, but the phrase "...like a rat up a drainpipe" springs to mind.

No,

I was in your shoes a month ago, and was like shit.. I want to try it and find out for myself. Even if I could make 1/2 a coin or something over a month or two that would be cool...

But my hasrate for mining coins was like 1000x lower than everyone else. And I'm on a baller build laptop with serious performance.

Just not worth it. Even being on a team, you're not going to make much of anything.

:(

There are a lot of ways to get on to this without actually buying or mining a single coin.

Examples

HOWTO Bitcoin eBook
Numerous SaaS opportunities
Create an Index Fund for CryptoCoins
Offer Bitcoin integration consulting for small businesses

Not really, no. It's too competitive now. If you really wanna mine, you're better off gettin' one of them fancy ASIC miner things.

And with the difficulty rising exponentially every day, you would have a hard time breaking even after a year of mining with "a fancy ASIC miner" add in electrity costs and it's even harder to profit mining Bitcoins today.

As for litecoins, while there are currently no ASIC miners out on the market yet, it's much harder to mine then BTC. So even if you bought a $2000+ rig with multiple graphics cards, when you factor in electricity it's virtually impossible to make a profit.

Just to be clear, this is true with the much smaller and virtually unknown (compared to Bitcoin) crypto-currencies?

Oh, I thought you could use those ASIC miners to mine all the types of coins. Shows how much I know

If you really want to make money off of this shit, take some of the open source crypto-currency code out there and start your own that centers on some bullshit cause.

"hivcoin is designed to blergitbloop blop with the hopes of curing HIV/AIDS."
"jewcoin is mathematically programatically endeavored to ensure that the Jewish homeland is forever free from rock throwing Palestinians".
"gopcoin uses a complex pseudomechanical cryptoflopdoodle to leverage the computing power of god fearing republicans every where to take back our country".

Then after everybody deposits their anonymous coins you claim you've been hacked and go live on your yacht.

I thought you were all doing this stuff? You know like thinking how to capitalize something?

That's disappointing :(

Just steal the fucking money. Luke is probably going to be on your case though.

I'll add it to my "It's like X but for Y" shitty startup idea generator.

It's like Facebook but for Dogs!
It's like Google Analytics but for Forums!
It's like Pinterest but for Ideas!
It's like Bitcoins but for Jews!

Some of the richest guys during the gold rush were the ones selling shovels.

Only way to have any sort of success with a low end system is to get into mining something the HOUR it goes public, hope you can mine a ton, then wish for the off chance that it'll get big.

A friend of mine mined quark coin for a week, accumulated around 25k of them on a pretty decent gaming computer.

They went up to 5c ea, then 10c, now they're around 20c from his week of mining. After it started getting popular his system could only mine maybe $10 worth a week.

As others have said, sell shovels, sell maps.

A friend of mine is at month 6 with his bitcoin biz, bringing in 30-50 bitcoins a day. It can be done, but you have to put actual thought into it, not ask a bunch of gay webmasters to hold your hand.
