Hostgator is absolute shit. From downtime, speed, customer support, they are just not good, don't use it for shared hosting or VPS.

hostgator was OK for shared, I migrated out of them and used downtownhost - there is a 50% off discount coupon somewhere if you look hard enough. DTH works out $40-$50 a year shared. Which is decent.
