Say you traded one piece of software for another...but before trading the software you both uninstall the programs and just swap the actual files. Does this in anyway break any copyright restrictions? (just assume you actually do delete the program...)

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying (and I'm also not sure that the word you're looking for is 'copyright'...)

So you're saying that you have program X and your buddy has program Y. You uninstall X and give the files to your buddy, and he in turn uninstalls Y and gives you the files. Is that about right?

In that case, as long as SOMEONE, somewhere along the lines made an original purchase and only ONE license is being used at a time, you're fine.

It is against pretty much every EULA (End User Licensing Agreement) to install in your machine and then install on another machine without uninstalling on the first. Not to say it isn't done 12,000,000 times a day, but it is illegal.

Does that answer your question?

Yes- thanks, sorry for the confusing reply.

I was thinking about doing some sort of file swap site...but I realized I have no way to really enforce the copyright issue since you can never tell if someone actually deleted the file on their PC...

A more compelling question might be...

"Who would notice or even care?"

:) All joking aside, your operational assumption should be that
it indeed would be a violation of some kind, or at the very least
subject you to potential problems.

But as the old saying goes... it's not what you know, it's what
you can prove!
