A friend made something interesting.

There is a lot of criticism for Bitcoin because it has very few real commercial uses. Here is something that facilitates BTC for real commercial transactions.

Here's a reddit thread about Coinlock:

Coinlock: Upload files, Share Links, Make Money - Requires Chrome. End-to-end encryption. : Bitcoin

What is this?
Coinlock is a person to person fully encrypted anonymous escrow service. It is designed to help you sell your content from anywhere in the world. We act as a semi trusted intermediary in that we host and serve content once payment is processed.

What browser should I use?
We recommend a stable version of Google Chrome, or the Chromium open source browser. Coinlock uses advanced functionality that may not be implemented in earlier versions of Chrome, or other browsers.

Can you decrypt the data submitted to your service?
No

I've lost the link to the content I submitted, can you get me the link back?
We cannot generate working links to submitted content. Only people who have the links can use them

Can I get my money back?
Due to the nature of the Bitcoin payment network we cannot refund payments.

My browser crashed during download, can I get the content without paying again?
Unfortunately there is no way for us to validate that payment was successful. This is a one time transaction. Every effort has been made to ensure that downloads complete successfully, but due to a wide range of conditions outside of our control we cannot guarantee transmission in all circumstances.

Can you list file names of uploaded content?
No. All identifying information is replaced with random data.

I need to contact the original uploader of content can you help me?
We have no way of contacting the original uploader beyond the Bitcoin payment address which is an anonymous identifier.

How do you know links are valid?
We can validate that the link can successfully decrypt the file uploaded, but have no way of verifying the content of the data submitted or its validity.

Aren't the links in your log files?
No. Link data beyond the blob identifier is never sent to our servers.

Why did you build this?
To help facilitate the selling of digital products.

Do I need a bank account to use this service?
No. Payment is made entirely to the sellers bitcoin address.

Can I pay with a credit card or some other way?
Unfortunately no. Bitcoin can be purchased through third parties in numerous ways including credit card but this service operates entirely using Bitcoin. Check out We use Coin for more info.

Are you a money transfer service?
Absolutely not.

What fees do you assess?
Standard comission is 4% plus file hosting and transmission costs per gigabyte. These fees increase the total cost of the file.

Why does choosing a currency to list a file matter?
The value of the digital content is pegged to the value of the currency selected. So $5 USD would be converted to the weighted spot rate of Bitcoin (BTC) at the time of purchase.
inb4 more of the dark side of the internet monetized anon with btc

heh.

Cool idea. Looking forward to seeing it expanded upon.

@ShadowCaster, works in Chromium alternatively.

Yeah, what's with the Chrome requirement? Decent idea though.

BTW... if you're by chance your friend, and developed this yourself, please drop me a PM. Wouldn't mind asking a question or two regarding BTC integration. Blockchain API docs are a tad lacking.

those very real commercial issues include the fact that it gyrates like a penny stock and its horrendous illiquidity. show me a biz owner eager to take on that mess unless they literally have no alternative, and i'll show you a biz owner about ready to rejoin the workforce.
