I figured I'd post my "crowdsourced casting" website idea here and see if I could get any type of feedback about the concept itself from some of you creative people. A site like this really only works if enough movie fans actually want to use it, and I just wanted to see if you guys think something like this is worth putting ANY time into.
So, would you use a website like this as a movie fan?:
CastAStar.com | Choose the right actor for upcoming movies!
The idea for the website came about years ago, mainly because I was always having conversations/friendly debates/arguments with friends and family about which actor should play which character role in upcoming movies.
We'd always debate exactly just who should play who in upcoming movies or potential movies that are based on popular older movies and shows, books, real life events, stories of the past, and comics that my friends, family and I hoped/heard would one day be made into films. I noticed these sorts of "actor debates" were being had by other people in places like the IMDB boards/lists, IMGUR comments, Reddit comments, and on popular movie blogs, so it seems like this is a popular conversation topic for a lot of people online and offline.
I would appreciate ANY type of feedback you can give me, and I would love to see which actors people here would choose for a lot of these movies. You can cast actors in all of the movies listed right now. You can sign up and cast a star using e-mail or Facebook. I'm open to all feedback and I can make any suggested or necessary changes if this website is something movie fans would like to use regularly.
Looking at the whole idea, I guess I see it along the lines of a casual/fun game/website/concept that could potentially be a "social influencer" of sorts if enough movie fans actually gave their input on specific actors and characters.
It would be really interesting to see which actors/characters would "rise to the top" if enough people are casting their favorite choices and sharing their actor choices/sharing the website throughout the major entertainment communities/forums/blogs out there.
Any feedback on the general concept/function of the website from movie fans or from people here on WF that are working in the entertainment industry or working on entertainment-related websites and projects? What is this demographic like in your experiences, would they use this "socially" in your opinion as "resource" or "game"? Obviously aesthetically it would need overhauls and lots of changes, but really I just your feedback on the concept of "crowdsourced casting" itself, not necessarily the site "design" or anything. Just put up the site, python/django, got it functioning as intended to see how people react to the concept. I'd love for people to play around on it and drop me some feedback.
I would say that the way for the website to be more "relevant" than other popular sources would be getting enough registered users/passionate movie fans selecting actors and sharing their choices across FB, etc. That would be my intended goal with the FB app integration. Like I mentioned, these conversations proliferate the net in a few major areas in my experiences...but they are never in a "central" website that is designed JUST for this reason: crowdsourced casting. The entire function/purpose of this website is "crowdsourced casting", while other movie websites and entertainment communities serve lots of other purposes and interests. I think it becomes a "how many people would actually ACTIVELY be using a central casting resource like this?" issue...and there truly are not a TON of movies that "fit" into this type of website as you can see. Pretty much the movies listed are all I could get that "fit" the idea. So I'd probably be looking at no more than 30-50 movie pages total...
Now I'm just waiting for IMDB to announce their "New Highly-Requested Feature" for casting actors in upcoming roles. But really, in my opinion this is certainly a concept that MANY websites, companies, and people could have taken advantage of over the years, but they have NOT done so for whatever reason. It is always good to try and figure out that "reasoning" too. Your thoughts?
