Monday's 7.9 magnitude tremor, which was focused in China's Sichuan Province, is estimated to have killed at least 22,000 people — and that toll has continued to rise dramatically as rescue teams reach the most affected areas. In cities near the earthquake's epicenter, thousands are buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings.

The Chinese government estimates that at least 436,000 homes have been destroyed, and there are reports that almost five million people are homeless.

On Thursday, Janis and another team member helped CFPA set up a temporary relief office in the city of Chongqing, from which they are coordinating relief efforts.
"Things here are changing so fast," Janis said. "The sheer scale and loss of this is hitting people...they're predicting 50,000 deaths now."

We need your help to provide help to thousands of survivors who have lost their homes and loved ones.

Living in the Pacific NorthWest, every major earthquake that happens anywhere in the world... it seems like we are playing Russian Roulette with mother nature.

We are unfortunately long overdue in this area.

Very true on both points. Anyways, this made the front page of Wikipedia News as well. Very sad.

I also heard China is allowing alot, if any, Red-Cross assistance or any other emergency services for some reason?

I'll second that feeling! I'm also in the Pacific North West and am really hoping that the "big one" does not happen in my lifetime. I remember when we had a 4-ish earthquake back in 2002, it was pretty scary shit.. can't imagine a 7-8 magnitude.

Luckily most structures here are built quite solidly. Still scary though.

Sad shit. These acts are God are fuckers aren't they?

Good to see the Chinese government responding a lot better than Burma after the cyclone (or even the US after hurricane Katrina), but very sad they they've found billions to waste on the fuckin olympics while millions of people still live in poverty.

Its hardly a waste.

No? How is it not a waste?

We are doing the same shit... suddenly finding all this cash to entertain the world in a few years, spending the whole countries money on London (once again). Certainly not as big a waste of cash as the Iraq fiasco, but it would still be better spent on more nurses, teachers, police officers or on providing clean water to kids in Africa.

For both China and the UK, while the Olympics will certainly bring money into the economy and help a lot of people it's mostly going to help those living in the richest parts of both countries and will benefit the few rather than the many.
