hey all,

I have been thinking about getting a pc to run the automations for my marketings.

I've been a mac user for the last 10 years and feel like rainman a thousand miles away from a casino when I get around a pc. needless to say i'm pretty out of the loop.

what would be a good cheap pc just to run tools on. I won't be gaming or anything, just automationing..ing

I'd really appreciate any advice,

thanks.

Have you thought about using a (last gen) Mac mini? If it's powerful enough, I think it would make a good choice (size/design, noise, power consumption). Though I barely have any automation experience yet.

Memory would need an upgrade. Surely not the cheapest solution but might be worth a thought? Depending on your wants and needs.

edit: Oops, the mini quoted is an early 09 one, so 2nd last gen.

Just get the cheapest one... It will have enough power to do your job.

What application will you use to automate your tasks? If it supports multi-threading an Internet upgrade might be a good idea - to at least 10-15 megabits.

Go get the cheapest DELL, HP, or other reputable computer brand. Stick away from Gateway/Emachines and for Christ's sake, stick away from those tiny ass computers that you can't upgrade or repair well (like the Dell Zino). If you have any problems with those smaller machines, you're fucked. Stick away from Celeron and Sempron. A Mac Mini might be an option, but just remember that $400 for a PC will get you waaaaaaaay more hardware than $400 for a Mac.

Because they're just crap in general and a real CPU is only like $15 more when customizing the machine. The quality of Celeron's are awful. Sempron's are actually okay, but get an Athlon for a few bucks more and you'll be glad you did - especially when the world is running on Windows 7. It's not 1990 anymore.
