Really? I haven't even asked just assumed it was necessary...never seen anyone not take their shoes off these days.

Because I'm an asshole I always say no to taking off my shoes and the backscatter xray. Worst that happens is - surprise! - a secondary where they bomb swab my shoes and look at my carryon. Principles, dammit.

Speaking off assholes and penises - there are existing algorithms for genital, butthole, blowjobs and breast detection in pictures. It could even detect revere cowgirl. It's crazy.
