CERN Scientist Announces Higgs Boson 'God Particle' Discovery

I started clapping too just to make myself feel better, because I had no clue wtf he said. And don't pretend you did either, bastards.

Not to dampen the fun here but it's Higgs-like. It probably is the Higgs, but it hasn't been totally confirmed. It's a new Boson they have 5sigma confidence in the mass and energy, but still needs to be confirmed to be the actual Higgs that fits the standard model

Sigma is simply a measure of the square root of the variance = the average of the squared differences from the mean. Basically for anyone that knows sums:

It's simple stuff,
N = number of data samples
x = value of sample
u = difference from the mean

To give you a rough estimate, in a normal sample with millions of data points (i'm just guessing because I don't really know how many tries they had in order to come up with the certainty), you're looking at a 99.977% chance that the fluctuations in the quantum fields they were observing where due to the presence of the higgs boson. That's about as close you can get to a yes without actually "seeing" the particle itself. It's a great confirmation but it's nowhere close to unifying general relativity with quantum physics. The main problem is with gravity.

The higgs boson has nothing to do with god or anything religious. I wish the stupid media would drop that term.

To give you a rough estimate, in a normal sample with millions of data points (i'm just guessing because I don't really know how many tries they had in order to come up with the certainty), you're looking at a 99.5% chance that the fluctuations in the quantum fields they were observing where due to the presence of the higgs boson. That's about as close you can get to a yes without actually "seeing" the particle itself.

except that 5 sigma is way more certain than 99.5%

Yes, sorry i was off a bit, i changed it to 99.977%. THAT is accurate. 6 sigma is a lot more certain.

99.4% sure, Tits...

I tried looking into this but I'm hopeless at understanding anything they are talking about. So this particle is is what's inside the particles that's inside protons and electrons?

excuse me it's called the God particle for a reason

Looks like it's back to band practice . . .

"According to the Economist, the Higgs Boson was dubbed the “Goddamn Particle” by Leon Lederman since it was seemingly impossible to isolate. Lederman, a leading researcher in the field, wanted to title his book “The Goddamn Particle: If the Universe is the Answer, What is the Question?” But his editor decided that the title was too controversial and convinced Lederman to change the title to “The God Particle:"

The God Particle, The Goddamn Particle, And The Higgs Boson

It spins the opposite way to what they were expecting through. Hence they are calling it the Dog particle now.

Atheists are so interdasting.

I came here to learn more about the Discovery and all I got was Atheists who dont even understand what it is talking shit. Cant we just talk about physics.

This is the best explanation of the Higgs Boson I've found

Watched the cartoon yesterday, then watched the announcement last night. I am very excited and I have no idea what's going on. From what I understand this is a thing that creates mass in sub-atomic particles. Sounds important. Science, fuck yea!
