Some money from my mother's estate is going to be freed up soon, meaning I will be trading in the 1986 beater. I would like to spend in the area of ten grand for a used car. What's the best model you can recommend for the money? So far I'm interested in the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic and Accord.

Make sure you check out eBay - you'll get a lot more for your money than from a dealer or classified ads etc. I think my last 7 or 8 vehicles have been from eBay (I get bored and change a lot!) - def worth checking out!

What is your need? If you're a hustler I'd suggest some type of truck. Nissan or toyota because of the gas mileage. If you're trying to mack but need to impress because you hve no mouthpiece get a foreign car BMW's are cheap as well as Land Rovers, Audi's, Lexus etc...

Personally spending 10 on a used car is a waste. I'm saying this from the perspective you don't have any money, and would sugest you spend the 10 to make more money instead of buying something of no value and that is only going to decrease.

BUT if you are already balling and the 10 grand is just petty cash and all you want to spend on getting some decent transpo, go with what fits you the best. Like, if you have kids get a 4-door. Flying solo and with dates grab a coupe. Solo and no dates get a bike. Gas and insurance no issue go for the gas guzzling speed demon.

E320 - cheap sporty look i personally don't like the way mercedes drive but many like looks
ES300 - cheap great handling
Land Rover Discovery - cheap both foreign / Suv
Audi A4 - foreign often over looked
Scion - new but sporty
Hyundai Elantra / Sonata - you'll be surprised
Honda Accord LX - almost all of the features of the EX but a lot cheaper
Nissan Maxima - good speed plenty of power features
VW Bug - gas/looks + older models look like new ones to the unrained eye
Dodge Charger
Chevy Camaro
Cadillac STS

You'd have to be blind to confuse the hippy-uncomfortable-unreliable-often-falling-apart style of the old ones with the trying-a-bit-too-hard-to-be-trendy-with-a-nod-to-the-past design of the newer ones... kinda like em both in their own ways! :D (my unrained eye couldn't tell an 02 from an 06 model or whatever though)

Being British.. I've gotta say I like German cars! I've had Beemers, VWs, an Audi and a Porsche and had no real probs with them... yet when I've had a Ford or Vauxhall/GM I've always had probs!

take into account the other costs too. edmunds.com has this awesome true cost to own rater/calculator. problem is that it only goes back to about 03 i think. you'd be suprised, sometimes the cheaper cars can come close to costing the same as luxury vehicles.

If you don't give a shit about looks or performance, get a low miles honda civic. It won't let you down.

What is your need?

Reliable. Good on gas. My dream car is a Prius, but it's pricey for me. I want the car that's best for the ecology, that uses the least gas possible, as I already walk and take the bus whenever possible. I have no ego about what I drive whatsoever, and don't feel the need to impress.

A friend recommends that I get something with less than 50,000 miles, and that costs a bit of cash.

LazyHippy, of course i was talking about the older new version and the newest new version NOT the old OLD version and the new version. lol.

It's great you want an eco friendly car, which makes me wonder why not a bike? If you can find one honda has made a gas saving version of the Civic for many years and sometimes a hybrid version, usually they are in Canada but you might find one in the states. It's not the DX, LX or EX version.

Narrow the cars down a bit, then call local service stations for quotes on oil change, tune ups and basic maintenence, then you can ge a batter picture of your long term cost. Wish you luck.

go for a japanese car. Ive got a toyota 4 runner with 110k miles on it. Not one breakdown or problem

Honda Civic
Toyota Corolla
These two would fit perfectly for your budget.

Accord/Camry - if you could get real bargain
