For anyone experienced with various free CMS, which one would be the best and require the least customization for a family website?

I own our family name as a domain name and I think it would be neat for my extended family to each have a password and be able to update the page with their family's updates and photos - like adding a new blog entry. An event calendar would be nice too. I'd normally program something from scratch, but this venture wouldn't be making me any income, so I'd rather not spend too much time setting it up.

Thanks!

I've used Mambo quite a bit in the past. It's since forked off into Joomla, but Mambo is still active and comes preinstalled with my hosting plan, so I haven't tried the latter.

Anyhow, it's insanely easy to make this thing do what you want it to, and setting up things like calendars is a snap. Instead of the usual

download plugin -> extract .zip -> upload to server -> activate

plugin formula, you just download the zip and point to it from inside Mambo's admin panel. It uploads the zip from your browser, extracts it, and installs it for you.

It's open source and free to boot.

Wow, I personally think that's a real neat idea. I might steal the idea and use it for my family! ;)

For me, that only CMS that I use is http://www.textpattern.com but as was said wordpress I'm sure would work also. It seems that TXP and Wordpress are along the same lines, although from what I understand TXP has more "CMS" features rather than just blogging features.

Don't know if you've heard of it or not, but you can just try a bunch of different ones at http://www.opensourcecms.com

Thanks everyone. I'm checking out some of your suggestions. I'm looking at Joomla right now and it has a Birthdays extension that would be really neat to use for a family website - so we can remember when everyone's birthday is!

Hi, I would recommend Wordpress or Joomla :)

You could try Drupal too but it's more community oriented :)
