I know this is a simple question, but is it a bad idea to backup personal data to your shared hosting space? I'm planning on putting everything in a password encrypted .zip or .rar.

Is there any way people could still retrieve this data if it's an encrypted zip in a password protected directory?

yeah, there's software that does it

here's what i would do:
- rar it with a password
- upload it
- change the extension to .jpg or .mpeg (anything obscure will do)

Depending on how your hosting is set up you may be able to store it in a non public directory, that way the only way it will be found is if your server get's hacked.

call the file or folder, nanna's wedding pics and it won't get a second look.
