Some might remember a thread I posted about trying to get out of a 1and1 contract.....

http://www.wickedfire.com/hosting-domains/19146-1and1-contract-termination.html

I ended up reporting my credit card stolen to get away from 1and1 as someone else advised. When 1and1 noticed that I was no longer paying for a server with them, they locked my access to change anything on my domains name left registered there. They even blocked me from seeing the AUTH codes to transfer them out. Thankfully I trasnferred most out of there before this happened. The few left there I don't really care about much. They still should not be allowed to do that though.

I'd say not much recourse you can have, but let sleeping dogs lie I guess.

I don't care about losing the few crappy domains left there, I was just surprised that they did it. My hosting should be seperate from my domains. I wasn't even using those domains with their hosting. I guess nothing that 1and1 does should surprise me anymore though. Their cheap prices are tempting, but everyone should avoid them like the plague.

If they think the domains were paid on the "stolen" card, they probably had no choice on the domain part.

All that 1and1 knows about the card is that they can't automatically charge it anymore. The credit card company just turned off my old number that 1and1 had on file, then issued me a new one. I didn't dispute any charges.

I had a similar problem, only with shared hosting. I cancelled after 4 months of monthly billing to move over to HostGator. However, I got billed the next month. I didn't care, just figured it was taking a while to update the billing. I wasn't going to contact them over $6. But the next month I got billed again, so I emailed them to make sure it got cancelled. Apparently I agreed to a 2 year contract....

My account was also locked after canceling my card. I had three domains in there, but only one I cared about. The DNS were already pointing to the correct place, so I just used GoDaddy to backorder it, and 9 months later I got it pulled into my GD account :D

Anyways, lesson learned right?

I posted on this exact thing a while back here... 1and1 sucks I learned the hard way I had a domain for years and transfered it to them and when I went to cancel they locked down my account and I had to pay out a year to get access back to transfer my domain away from them.. glad i read this because I have to report my card stolen also because I know they will find a way to keep me locked in and my time is coming up. I know they will come up with some bullshit I didnt cancel 1 year in advance or some stupid excuse...

Avoid 1and1 they SUCK!
