What tips/tricks does everyone use to automate their life? Whether it deals with creating sites/content or daily administration?

My main thing (though not really a trick of any sort) is the use of cron. You can set up all your backups to run there and not have to worry about running them daily. I also set it to check for patches and upgrades for the servers.

Yes cron and back up scripts for mysql databases etc help. One less thing to forget.

RSS Feeds :)
When i get bored with a website, but don't wanna sell it, i just slap some rss feeds on it to keep it lookin active till i decide to continue with it.

A cms. Either a custom built one or existing. Basically where I only need to add content and have the page pre-built. Cron for backups and repeated tasks, RSS for dynamic content.

Don't you teh get slapped with a dupe content penalty for only having rss feeds?

Can you set cron to send a db backup to an email address?

Automation is my main goal for the end stage of dynamic content sites, I set up complex user group management to allow a community to administer the site for me and use voting systems to filter out crappy contributions.

You could write a simple email script and have cron run the script.
