The landrush opened today, I'm gonna get a list in a see what happens. Doubt I'll get anything amazing but who knows, quite surprised as some of the stuff not pre-registered - arab.asia, uae.asia, sex.asia - bet that goes for a fair bit.

Anyone else going for em? I've seen prices from $24-$36 (rebel.com, hostway.co.uk) for 2 years and the proxy services seem cheap, but I think using a friend as a contact in asia/oz/nz might be better. Any nightmare companies to avoid?

Guess this might be talked about more in the other domain bit. GL to anyone going for em, but sextourism.asia and ladyboys.asia are mine! (That sounds so wrong.)

hmmm... sexfrom.asia, anal.asia ..., wow, thousands great .tld tie-in domain options for the pron kings.

There's no real advantage to pre-registering during this sunrise. After the .eu flop I have very low expectations for .asia.

How do you register without being local?

you can contact your friend from asia to register it for you. Oh yeah, pick who you can trust. It's not nice if he's running with your domain.

anyway, regarding .asia has been discussed in domaining section. FYI we have low expectation for .asia since we saw what happened with .eu

...just a heads up, could be wrong tho.

Some registrars offer a proxy service - think it was £3/year with hostaway.

I'm going for mostly single word generics, maybe some place names too. I'm hoping that after EU a lot of people don't bother with ASIA and I get sex.asia for the reg fee :D

If you have a friend buy the domain, do they still require authentication when transferring the account?

No idea what transferring involves, sorry. But only one of the registration contacts needs to be in Asia (or Oz/NZ).

What concerns me about using a friend is whether they would be liable for tax after profitable sales. It's one thing asking a friend to be a contact, it's another asking them to deal with any tax implications. Although I'd obviously pay any tax due, they would need to go to the hassle of declaring it etc.

Does anyone have any info on the legal side of this? Can a .ASIA domain legally be owned by someone outside of the territory or is the contact in Asia regarded as the legal owner (and therefore liable for tax)?

I would check IDNForum. 1) alot of asian domainers there and 2)they have probably plotting and talking about .Asia for weeks.

Good luck!

Did you end up winning any?

i trying to find out more about the .asian domain rush. i lived in japan for a while, and am returning this weekend. I have friends who could probably help if a resident or company of asia is the only one who can register the names. Where can I get some more good information on all of this?

Many offer the required local service.
Moniker - says registry offers the local presence service. They do not provide it themselves though.
DomainMonster offers it automatically, so I got mine through them.

Use registrars with a presence in asia.

Check encirca.com, domainbank.com, enom.com and 007names.com - all of these are authorized resellers of .asia domains
